Thanks to the "wise men," as they called themselves, the Astros made a late charge and remained in contention into the final weekend because veterans such as Mark Loretta, Geoff Blum, Brad Ausmus and Darin Erstad made strong contributions after initially being signed to serve as bench players.
Manager Cecil Cooper and several players credited the wise men's leadership with helping keep the club together.
"I don't want any (credit), but I think it's more about the players and them coming together as a group," said Cooper, who personally cited the wise men when he thanked his team after the penultimate game of the season. "I think it goes back to what I said ... to the Ausmuses, the Erstads, the Blums, those kinds of guys who were kind of the glue that pulled people...

The Houston Astros removed righthander Dave Borkowski and infielder Jose Castillo from their 40-man roster on Wednesday, sending them outright to Class AAA Round Rock.

The Houston Astros sent pitchers Dave Borkowski, Jack Cassel and Ryan Houston and infielder Jose Castillo outright to Triple-A Round Rock on Wednesday. Borkowski and Castillo have the right to refuse the assignment and become free agents. Cassel and Houston become free agents because of their minor league service time.
