Pirates Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The primary charge of John Russell in his first season as Pirates manager was to change the culture of losing that has pervaded the franchise.

Russell did make an impact there. The Pirates played hard right through the end of the season after quitting on manager Jim Tracy in the previous two seasons.

"I really like the effort my guys gave me every single day," Russell said. "They always kept battling and they never quit."

"The record is definitely disappointing," Russell said.

Or Freddy Sanchez. Or both. The Pirates flirted with halting their streak of consecutive losing seasons that dates to 1992 by staying relatively close to .500, at least until they dealt Bay and Nady in late July.
