Varitek Rumors And The Reality

November 26th, 2008 · No Comments

Now that Jason Varitek is a free agent waiting for offers from other teams, news agencies are hungrily waiting for something to report on.

WEEI.com, the Web site for the Red Sox’s flagship radio station is one. They have “heard” (cited sources) that the Sox offered Varitek a 1 year contract comparable to the Posada deal (@ 13 million /year).

According to Boras (Varitek’s agent): He knows nothing of a 1year deal offered to Varitek and he’s had no financial discussions with Epstein concerning Jason.

Jason, a little advice:

Take whatever deal the Sox offer you. To my knowledge there are no plans to institute a designated hitter for the catcher’s spot in the lineup and there are no better offers coming from other teams. The reality is you aren’t going to do any better and if you don’t want to end up in the minors or on the bench in a diminished role, sign on the dotted line.

I don’t care that Boras is telling you there’s a “significant market” market for your skills. He’s blowing smoke up your butt buddy. Sure you can call a great game and I know you play your heart out. But no team wants a guaranteed out in their batting order.

Defense is a huge part of any game but I’ll take the tradeoff of a less than stellar performance behind the plate if it means at least the potential for more offense. Be honest, if Varitek came up with 2 outs in an inning, how many of you went to the kitchen for a sandwich and a cold one?

Until you can prove you can hit, take what you can git.
