Is Plaxico Burress More Trouble Than He’s Worth?

November 29th, 2008 · No Comments

Never mind the scuffles with coach Tom Coughlin during a game. Nevermind that the police have had to respond to domestic disturbances at his house (it’s almost commonplace to hear that now). And nevermind that he was suspended for missing a team meeting early in October (that must happen more than we hear about, right?).

Yes we can forgive Plaxico and the rest of these players for their indiscretions because they’re our heroes. Any why are they our heroes? Because they can run faster, jump higher, “do the dance” better and twist and spin more adeptly than we can…all while catching, running with or throwing a football.

You can clearly see that they have earned their lofty titles, positions (and salaries) in our society. They’ve achieved the pinnacle of success through talent, hard work and perserverance and yet they still teeter even after they’ve reached the top.

The latest deal with Plaxico is that he accidently shot himself in the leg. Nothing life-threatening mind you just your run of the mill, “I’m a cowboy, watch me twirl my gun and slide it in my holster” kind of fun the boys like to have when they’re not practicing.

Actually I don’t know the details of the incident so maybe he wasn’t wearing his cowboy hat and boots but the fact remains he shot himself. I was brought up around guns and taught gun safety at a very early age so it’s hard for me to understand how any responsible adult can accidently shoot themself.

But maybe therein lies our answer…

He’s clearly an adult, at least that’s what the math says when you subtract his DOB from 2008. Responsible adult maybe stretching it though. If it weren’t for the laundry list of stupid things he’s done lately, maybe I could overlook this incident. Accidents do happen. But I think Plaxico marches to the beat of his own drummer (Plaxico being Plaxico?). I don’t believe this will be the last “incident”. He’s a trainwreck waiting to happen and might just crash at the end of the track in a spectacular fiery ball. And the media will say it’s an incredible trajedy, which it will be, but it will also be an incredible waste.

If it were me writing his checks, I’d be starting to think of a severence package about now.
