Why did the Red Sox want to make sure that Manny didn’t end up at Tampa Bay?

I get the rest of the deal… I get the green bay joke… and the pirates / dodgers thing.. but I don’t get why the Sox did NOT want manny in FL? Was it just to spite him, because that’s where he wanted to be?
