Is the MLB all-star voting a joke?

January 24th, 2009 · 9 Comments

red sox joke
?mega Trojan asked:

Josh Hamilton who lead all the majors in RBIs, is second in the AL Home Runs and third in batting average is ranked 6TH for AL outfielders in all-star game voting.

Additionally, a Yankee or Red Sock leads ALL positions in the AL! If the all-star game were to start today, there would be a Yankee or Red Sock at ever position except 2 outfielders.

Are these teams that good? The Yankees have a losing record and the Red Sox aren’t even leading their division.

This is because the fans do the voting. I am a Red Sox fan and we are far more inclined to vote ….and often, than other teams so we end up flooding the ballots with our team’s players.
It is not always right but it is the fans game!

I agree with Ryan S. Most fans(not all of them) don’t think about what players are performing the best this year, they just vote for the name they’ve heard off. So, yes, it really is a joke.

The All Star voting is a joke, but if the fans are involved in the voting that’s just how it’s going to be. Most fans will vote for their team even if they aren’t the best in the league. (I’ll admit, I’ve voted for a few Indians that I know aren’t the best at their position.) Anyway, since the Yankees and Red Sox have way more fans than say the Royals or the Rays they’re obviously going to get more votes.

PS the Red Sox are good, but I don’t know that they’re SO good that they should be the only team going to the game.
Yankees?-I definately don’t think (talentwise) they should be getting the amount of votes they’re getting.

It’s the popular vote and the Yankees and Red Sox are the two most popular teams in the nation

YA I TOTALLY AGREE WITH U. AS A GIANTS FAN THEY ARNT THE BEST TEAM BUT A COUPLE OF THE PLAYERS DESERVE TO BE IN THE ALL STAR GAME, BUT LIKE U SAID ONLY BIG NAME PLAYERS MAKE THE ALLSTAR TEAM CAUSE THATS WHO EVERYBODY KNOWS AND VOTES FOR. I WISH FANS DIDNT GET TO VOTE, INSTEAD PLAYERS AND COACHES

Well..its incedibly stupid that Josh won’t start because he would bring great defense AND offense to the team. But its a popularity contest…though i WILL vote Hamilton many times.

I agree that it is a joke, All Star game voting should be left up to the players and coaches, they will vote in the best players in THAT season. For example Arod leads 3rd baseman in voting and he was on the DL for most of the month!
