Trivia question, also related to the Detroit Tigers?

February 1st, 2009 · 5 Comments

Will asked:

I am disgusted with the Tigers! I think I **** this year’s team more than the Tiger teams that only managed 50 wins a year! How does a team that was basically picked by everyone to win the World Series not even make the playoffs? Hell for that matter not even be at least .500?

This leads me into a trivia question. You can use any example from the NHL, MLB, NBA, and NFL to answer it. What team can you recall in the last 15-20 years that was a favorite to win their respective championship not even make it into the post season??? Maybe the New Jersey Devils of 1996, but I believe the Avs, Wings, Rangers, and Flyers were the favorite that season.

I cant think of any. Any team predicted to win a championship has at least made the playoffs. I know that there are teams that have won a championship one year and then not make it to the playoffs the next season, but thats not what Im talking about. Im talking just before the season starts, preseason picks to go all the way, then choking like the Detroit Tigers, who if you havent gotten my hint about them yet, ****!

Notoriously, Sports Illustrated picked the Cleveland Indians to be the class of the AL in 1987. They finished dead last — not just in the division and the league, but with the worst record in Major League Baseball.

And thus the “cover curse” was born.

I think the Indians in Chipmaker’s instance were favoured to win the AL east because they had the other 6 teams win in 6 successive seasons.
    Yankees 81
    Brewers 82
    Orioles 83
    Tigers 84
    Jays 85
    Boston 86
So, it was Cleveland’s turn, right?

Even though they didn’t have playoffs, you had to figure with a similar team, the 94 Jays would have been the favourties to get to the playoffs, since they won the previous 2 WS titles.
    Didn’t even hit .500

Haha i live in Ann arbor, Michigan and I am a diehard Yankee fan…. hahaha! People here getting their hopes up… tho of course i also thought that the tigers had a very, very good chance of winning the world series. But anyway the tigers are a good team tho… just kinda unlucky i guess.
