Ed Kranepool was my first guess, since he played for the 62 Mets at the end of the season and I knew he was 17 at the time. And he held just about every Met batting record at the time he retired (because he played there the longest).

But I completely forgot that Kranepool did make the All Star team one year (1965, just looked it up at baseball-reference). Of course, every team had to have an all star representative.

And of course, he was used a lot as a pinch hitter, especially later in his career… and he was a pretty good pinch hitter too.

At the time Kranepool retired in 1979, he was the Mets all time home run leader, with 118 (at that time, former first baseman John Milner was second with 94, followed by Cleon Jones with 93… Dave Kingman and Tommie Agee rounded out the top 5.

Kingman passed Kranepool on the all time Met HR list in 1982.

Darryl Strawberry, with 252 HRs as a Met, is still the all time Mets leader, followed by Mike Piazza, Howard Johnson and Kingman. Strawberry became the Mets HR leader in 1988.

btw, Kranepool will be 64 years old this November.
