Killzone 2 is perhaps one of the best if not the best shooter out on the PS3. Whether you decide to play through the single player missions or you jump into the online multiplayer, the experience either way will amaze you. If you have played the first Killzone game do not worry. The story for Killzone 2 is pretty easy to follow.

In the opening sequence you hear the voice and then see the leader of the Helghast, Scolar Visari, making a public speech to his people of the incoming invasion of the ISA marines to their homeworld of Helghan. You are then introduced to your main character Sgt. Tomas Sevchenko, also known as “Sev”, as he and partner Rico are preparing their squad for launch to the Helghast’s homeworld. Thier mission is proceed to Helghan capital to capture Visari and put an end to the war against the Helghast. However,the Helghan’s defenses are proving to be more difficult to penetrate than ISA’s intel led them to believe. From large lightning guns to heavy armored troopers, this will be a hard fought battle to the Helghan capital.

The graphics of Killzone 2 are amazing. The designs of each level are breathtaking. From the character designs to the lighting effects you may be literally jumping at your character’s shadow as play through each level. As you play each level you can only carry one major weapon at a time. I know it seems limited but it does make you play with more strategy in mind. Along the way you will pick up more weapons such as shotguns, flamethrowers, and even a gun that shoots lightning. The are a couple of stages where you get to drive a tank and one where you hop into some type of mech suit and use it to mow down your enemies.

As good as the single player mission in Killzone 2 is, the online multiplayer is where its at. To begin with, online play can support up to 32 players at a time. The players on a team can then divide themselves into four man squads. This helps a lot because if you die during a game you can respawn where your squad leader is if he’s still alive.

There are five different missions in the Killzone 2 multiplayer.

First is Search and Retrieve: Your team must locate, pick up, and return a series of items to certain location before time runs out. If the player carrying the item is killed, the item is dropped making it available for other players to pick up. Your teams wins only by collecting more items than the enemy team.

Next is Search and Destroy: The attacking team must destroy a target before the time runs out while the defending team must protect.

Capture and Hold: A neutral target area will be shown on the map. Your team must get to that area and stay within it for a few seconds to capture it. If both teams are in the same target area it returns to neutral there is only one faction in the area.

Assassination: Find and take out the targeted player of the opposing team before the mission timer runs out.

Bodycount: Take out as many members of other team before the end of the game to win.

All missions in the Killzone 2 multiplayer can be customized to what missions you want to play,in which order, and how long you want to play.

When you first start playing the multiplayer in Killzone 2 you start off as the regular character known as the Riflleman. Riflemen have only the standard issue weapons. As you level up you will unlock other classes. Each class has a primary and secondary ability.

The Engineer: His primary is that he can mount an automated turret that targets the enemy. His secondary ability allows him to repair ammo dispensers, mounted guns, and turrets.

The Medic: His primary allows him to revive downed soldiers. His secondary ability lets him drop health packs that can be picked up by your teammates.

The Scout: With his primary he can activate a near-invisible cloaking suit. His secondary skill lets him tag all on-screen enemy players with a hidden marker, broadcasting their position to teammates.

Assault: His primary lets him equip heavy armor that is twice as strong as the default gear while the secondary skill temporarily boosts your running speed.

The Tactician: With his primary he can toss a colored smoke grenade which can serve as an additional spawn point. His secondary allows him to call in air support from a sentry bot to attack enemies on the ground.

The Saboteur: The primary for this is being able to wear the disguise of a randomly selected enemy player. His secondary lets him plant a proximity activated C-4 charge.

Once a class’ ability is unlocked you can then mix and match primary and secondary abilities to customize your ultimate soldier.(My favorite combo: Engineer/Tactician)

Killzone 2’s multiplayer will also allow you to set up clans and take part in tournaments. You can view your rankings or view the rankings of other members or clans.

Killzone 2 has the best single player and online multiplayer out there. This PS3 exclusive is a must have if you want the best shooter on the PS3.
