Who can I trade BJ Upton for?

May 20th, 2009 · 4 Comments

seaarrrr asked:

Is Billy Wagner worth getting? I’m in a head-to-head 10 team league and I’m short on relievers. My team currently:

hitters:
Ryan Doumit
Mark Teixeira
B.J. Upton
Adrián Béltre
Orlando Cabrera
Rickie Weeks
Raúl Ibañez
Hideki Matsui
Alfonso Soriano
Julio Lugo
Michael Young
Mike Jacobs
Johnny Damon
Michael Barrett
Eric Chávez

pitchers:
John Lackey
Dontrelle Willis
Chris Ray
David Weathers
Dan Wheeler
Roy Halladay
Javier Vázquez
Oliver Pérez
Tom Gordon (on my DL)
Chris Carpenter (on my DL & will drop if need extra DL spot)

note: I’m about to accept a trade to get Matt Cain for Weathers, so that’s why I am desparate for a closer. They are very few and far between in this league.

First of all move off the ledge….I wouldnt trade Cain for Weathers. To answer one of your questions is Wagner worth getting…Yes. The closer for a team that is going to probaly win 93 + games with no one really that could take his place.

BJ Upton is a strange one…yes his value is hight however its his first year in the league so people may be leary of moving a quality pitcher for him. I might throw his name out there a team that is weak at middle infielder for a middle of the road closer.

I also might float out Soriano and see if you can good value out of him, such as a good closer and maybe another OF in return.

Good job on the Cain for Weathers deal. Take it before he changes his mind. I personally think Carpenter is useless for this season. I’d grab Dotel, who’s soon to come off the DL, and will be KC’s closer upon his return. Your offense will be good once guys like Texeira, Young and Soriano get into their groove. I’m not a big fan of Beltre or Chavez, so I’d keep Upton for 3B and try to trade off one of those guys. If you don’t like Upton, I’d try to get Aramis Ramirez, who has yet to heat up and is in a great lineup. I don’t think you necessarily need more closers, you’d still have 3 after trading Weathers (4 if you grab Dotel), but if you feel you do, then yes, Wagner is definitely a good one to go for.

I would trade Upton for Wagner in a heartbeat. His value will never be higher. And as far as dropping Carpenter, I had to do it too, but his contributions will be minor over the long haul. Keep in mind, you may find someone with an open DL slot willing to take a chance on him though, so you could try to include him in a trade.

I wouldn’t trade him, chris ray and dan wheeler are good enough closers to compete with other guys. Don’t drop Carpenter he is too good to just drop like that. Don’t pick up Dotel because he isn’t definitely getting the closer role when he returns. Even without weathers, who may not keep the job when guardado returns, you will be fine. keep your team the way it is. i wouldn’t change a thing.
