Is It Too Late To Start Hockey?

January 2nd, 2010 · 11 Comments

dankupchinet96 asked:

I’m 15 and turning 16 in September. I forgot how to skate but since January, I’ve bought skates and go at least once a week. I learned to skate fast again, and learned to stop. I can turn corners and skate slowly backwards. I want to take extra lessons in March. Is it too late to go into a house league next winter when I turn 16?

Well I started hockey at 11 and I am in a house league and I am doing fine but since you are 15 i would start now and take extra classes to get better for next year because at that age there are some tremendous players.

Why would you want to start a stupid game like hockey?

    Football is much better!

no sir… go for it… i am 6′4″ and i was a basketball player all my life.. but when i hit highschool i lost interest in bball, so i played varsity golf till senior year than i was the captain of golf and decided to play JV hockey for my high school… its one of the best things ever… i wasnt very good at skating backwards but that didnt mean i couldnt be a forward! i scored 5 goals and had one assist so def. go for it

    Absolutely not!

You’re never too old to take this game up. It’s not to say you will make the NHL, but you can darn sure play hockey at an appropriate skill/competitive level.

    Best of luck…

no its not to late. I started playing at 16 and have now been playing for 14 years. Hockey is a great sport for anyone to play at any age.

its never to late to start any sport. the only thing is your skills will greatly differ from players who have been playing there whole life. but if you actually want to play and you care enough about the sport to get out there then i guarantee youll be fine. but you will have to try 100 times harder than the other players beause you are far behind players like that but like i said if you want it you can do it
    best of luck

If I remember correctly, Dominic Hasek started at about 13yrs. old and became one of the most successful (if not unorthodox) goalies in the NHL.

If you want to successfully play ice hockey, learn to skate well (forward, backwards, even sideways) without a stick before complicating matters (and possibly frustrating you) by integrating passing, shooting and puck handling into your game.

My advise is to get the skating down before investing in equipment.

If you are ready for equipment, check out the site below for equipment deals, discounts, close outs, new product lines and training aids to DVDs at great prices:

It’s never too late to do anything, you have to ask yourself that every time!As long as you put in the hard work and time into it.
