Mike Scoscia (sp), The LA Angels Manager

    or

Ron Gardenheir, the Twins Manager… No Matter How little they have to work with on a year to year basis, Gardenheier has the Twins in Contention in the AL Central, every year… And they have NO money for big Freeagents like My Yankees and The Red sox. They build from Within, and from smart trades.

There was Actually a LEague wide Player Vote on this, and the Players Voted Bobby Cox the Best, then Scoscia after Cox, then Torre, Then Larussa.

Jim Leyland. He took the Tigers to the world series with little talent.

Tony La Russa. He’s taken two teams on to win it all, one from both leagues, and his method of batting the pitcher in the 8 hole is genius. That way you can bat your best hitter third, thus allowing him to bat in the first inning, and then every at bat after he is virtually in the clean up hole, since a prototypical lead off hitter is slotted in the 9 hole. Plus the guy has a permanent game face.

thats a good list. torre, never keeps his lineup the same. which is good cuz it takes pressure off hitters and no matter where we are in the order, we’d always have a hitter. idk

La Russa. I really don’t think Cards is a good enough team to be where they are now but somehow they can perform as good as they are.

I cannot believe people say that he is underrated. I am Braves fan and Bobby Cox’s fan but after past three years and what I have seen this year. I have to admit Bobby is one of the most underrated manager.

RedSox has a huge team. It is so good from every perspectives. I don’t think Terry is bad but if he can do what Torre did to the dodgers, very few people will agree his achievement.

    terry francona

That’s tough because there are so many good ones managing right now. I’d say the best (and record-wise this isn’t arguable) is Tony La Russa. Joe Torre is high on my list, but he’s only had success wherever he’s had tons of financial support for the team. Mike Scoscia needs more time, but I think he’s going to be one of the greats before it’s all said and done. Bobby Cox used to get a lot more love until the vaulted pitching trio broke up and the playoff appearances stopped. As for your Terry Francona, I don’t know too much about him except that he’s very much following the Joe Torre route (i.e. it’s not rocket science to win with a top 5 payroll and a stacked farm system). I’ll be more impressed if he can take a mid market team and turn them into contenders.

I agree with you about Terry Francona, but I think that you must reserve judgment on managers of teams that can afford to buy the best talent, because those teams need little more than a caretaker, not a manager, per sè.

For example: While he was with the Yankees, I had my doubts about Joe Torre, as pretty much all he did was babysit a bunch of overpaid (although admittedly very talented) ballplayers.

Now that I’ve seen what he has done with the Dodgers, I cast my vote for Joe Torre.

But Tony LaRussa has to be mentioned in there, too, because the Cardinals are in there every year, many times when when their talent level says that they should not be.

    *** EDIT ***

And I also agree about Ron Gardenhire. The same as LaRussa’s Cardinals, the Twins are in the hunt seemingly every year, too.

They’re all good, and deserve mention, but I still think that Joe Torre is the best, though.

As a Yankee fan, i loved torre. I still continue to root for torre because he is a great coach, with a lot of baseball intelligence. I also think Lou Pinella is a great coach. He knows what he is doing, and keeps things in hand. I think Girardi will get fired this season and the Yankees will hire Lou Pinella, whos contract ends this season.

i would of said Joe torre, but the way he sold out the yankees, and put alex on blast like that , that was so unprofessional, as a yankee girl, he was the reason there was so much friction in the club house, he didn’t try to calm the situation in stead he went along with it, and he always stayed close with the veterans like jeter, posada,mo, andy and clemens, which is good they are great and i would love to hang around them too, but what about the new guys, the rookies, he didn’t want to or make them feel like part of the team, and for that reason, i’m going with tito, he keeps his mouth shut, and manages and he treat everyone as equals, and most importantly he WINS:)
