I am a die hard hockey fan and Devils fan. I have been watching the Devils and hockey since 1994 and I personally think the winter classic is just plain stupid. I feel as if it should be an exhibition game and that it is hyped way too much by the NHL. Maybe the league should start marketing some of its players more aggressively. Do any other hockey fans agree with me on this?
PS: I also forgot to add that I also think a good idea would be to make the all-star game be the outdoor game instead…anyone agree???

I actually have enjoyed watching them on TV……..ALSO…..I believe they have been great for the game. In fact, I remember last year on this site, people dropping by and asking questions about hockey because they happened to stumble upon it while channel surfing and they were drawn into it. How can that hurt? The Stanley Cup Champs vs the young and upstart Blackhawks……..isn’t that marketing it’s stars?

i think it is a great game to celebrate the origins of hockey.
and like the people above me said, it is great advertisement for the sport to people are channel surfing through the bowl games and get ****** in.
no, the all-star game is a joke. a real hockey game outside is so much better.

Are you crazy? Last year’s game was amazing. It was so fascinating, from what I hear all the players loved it. Most players grew up playing hockey outside in snow.
How can it be over-hyped? It is two of the original six teams playing in one of the most famous stadiums in the world. People travel across the country just to see a game in historic Wrigley field. The defending Stanley Cup Champions versus a young, talented, and exciting rival. I don’t like either team, but it doesn’t take a genius to know that it is a must watch game.

obviously u are not a die hard fan…hockey started outside…hockey is all about playing outside on a frozen pond i live in ohio so there is no way i could ever do that…i wish just once i could play outside on a frozen pond…ask any guy that plays in the NHL this is what they want…to play outside like they did when they were kids. its also great for the sport.

The Winter Classic is a good way to nurse the New Year’s hangover. other than that….it’s trash. It’s good for marketing, I suppose.
I don’t like your idea about the All-Star game because I think it is totally a bunch of junk. Get rid of the skills competition, IMO.

I was at the last winter classic. (Proud Sabres Fan) =) but no. i dont think it’s stupid. It’s a lot of fun and i really dont think it should be counted as an exibition.
Go Sabres.

It is not ridiculous. It is a throwback to all of hockey’s roots. You can’t beat that. The all star game is fine as it is . I do agree that the league needs to market more of it stars , not just the golden boy . Even though he has been doing a good job as the face of the NHL. There are many more players that deserve time in the spotlight .

definitely agree with you on the allstar game being an outdoor game, but its gotta be in the city of the hosts tho… but great idea!! i think nhl should have more outdoor games, its awesome to watch and i bet its just amazing to be at one

The Winter Classic is a fun event, for players and fans…. like it or not. I am sure it will be much more exciting to watch than the DEVS style of hockey the previous 15 yrs!

Earlier I was saying “not every year. not every year” for this Winter Classic. I was worried that the fun would be wrung out. But ya know what? I can’t wait for this years Winter Classic.
I’ve even had non-hockey fans tell me they were going to watch it because they saw last years and thought it was cool. It’s helping the sport, what’s ridiculous about that?
All Star Game? Naw. I will admit….I sometimes get kicks out of the All Star Game watching some guys play together, but when push comes to shove….it’s nothing more than a joke!

I don’t think it’s ridiculous. I think it’s a great marketing concept that’s going to get a lot of attention to the NHL. I can’t wait until New Year’s Day.

Nahh, I’d say it’s more interesting and conducive to promoting the sport as a sport than the All Star game is.

I like the Winter Classic. Last year’s was great, and guess what; it helped get people watching the game.
This year…two Original Six teams playing in Chicago (which should be a solid hockey market). Sounds like a winner in my book.
Here’s hoping for some favourable weather on Thursday and a good game.

the atmosphere for a all-star game is great, but the prices are ridiculous. $250 and its not even that close to the boards like an actual game!
