Pirates Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)

The Pirates' original plan for September recalls was to have a "moderate" number, as general manager Neal Huntington had laid it out, but that ended up blossoming into eight additions Monday: Outfielders Brandon Moss and Alex Presley, shortstop Pedro Ciriaco, catcher Jason Jaramillo and pitchers Brad Lincoln, Justin Thomas, Brian Bass and Steven Jackson.

All came from Class AAA Indianapolis, and Presley, Moss, Bass and Jackson needed to be added to the 40-man roster. To make room for those four, pitcher Ross Ohlendorf and first baseman Jeff Clement were placed on the 60-day disabled list, officially their seasons. Also, the team designated for assignment infielder Aki Iwamura and catcher Erik Kratz.

Presley and Moss were Indianapolis' top performers, Presley amassing 166...

MLB Power Poll: Sins of the Padres (SportingNews.com)
It's impossible to talk about the San Diego Padres' 2010 season without using some variation of the word "surprise." As in, they were surprisingly good for so long that it's pretty surprising they've fallen so quickly. On Aug. 26, they had 76 victories and were -- surprisingly (OK, shockingly) -- tied with the New York Yankees and the Tampa Bay Rays in the loss column in the race for baseball's best record. When Labor Day arrived, they still had 76 victories.
Walker homers, Pirates beat first-place Braves 3-1 (AP)
Neil Walker hit a two-run homer and Brian Burres limited Atlanta to one run over six innings in his first start in more than three months as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the slumping Braves 3-1 on Monday. Despite losing its fourth in five games, Atlanta was assured of remaining in first place in the National League East for at least another day when Florida beat Philadelphia in the first game of a...
NL Roundup: A look at Monday's games (The Canadian Press)
Losing to the lowly Pittsburgh Pirates is bad enough, but after dropping their fourth of five games the Atlanta Braves have bigger things to worry about.
Pirates to bring up 8 from Triple-A (AP)
The Pittsburgh Pirates will bring up eight players from Triple-A Indianapolis in time for Tuesday's game against Atlanta, including right-hander Brad Lincoln and outfielder Brandon Moss. Lincoln was 1-4 with a 6.57 ERA in nine midseason starts for Pittsburgh before being sent back to Indianapolis.
Zimmerman carries Nats, Marquis past Pirates 8-1 (AP)
5 Sep 2010 at 5:08pm
The Washington Nationals are all but certain to finish last in the National League East. After taking on the Pittsburgh Pirates, they realize how much worse it could be. Ryan Zimmerman drove in four runs, Adam Dunn homered and Jason Marquis won his second in a row after previously going winless all season as the Nationals beat the Pirates 8-1 in a matchup of last-place clubs Sunday.
Mazeroski teary-eyed at PNC Park statue unveiling (AP)
5 Sep 2010 at 2:55pm
Bill Mazeroski, an elite fielder who made it to the Hall of Fame because of his many Gold Gloves and one big swing, now has a bronze statue honoring that most memorable moment. Four of Mazeroski's 1960 Pirates teammates tugged away a protective cover Sunday to unveil a 14-foot, 2,000-pound statue depicting the second baseman, the only player to end a World Series Game 7 with a home run.
Pirates recall RH Martinez from Triple-A (AP)
5 Sep 2010 at 12:22pm
The Pittsburgh Pirates have recalled right-hander Joe Martinez from Triple-A Indianapolis, where he was 1-2 with a 5.72 ERA in seven games. Martinez was acquired from the Giants with outfielder John Bowker for left-handed reliever Javier Lopez on July 31. Martinez was 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in four games with the Giants.
Lannan, Nationals shut down Pirates 9-2 (AP)
4 Sep 2010 at 10:15pm
John Lannan continues to make a midseason demotion to Double-A pay dividends. He allowed only one run for the second consecutive start, Ivan Rodriguez had three hits and four RBIs and the Washington Nationals broke a three-game losing streak with a 9-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night.
Doumit, Jones help Pirates beat Nationals 8-5 (AP)
3 Sep 2010 at 10:29pm
Pittsburgh Pirates manager John Russell expected Ryan Doumit and Garrett Jones, two of the few non-rookies in his lineup, to break out of their slumps sooner or later. They did it Friday night. Doumit had three hits, including a home run, and two RBIs, and Garrett Jones drove in three runs to lead the Pirates to an 8-5 victory over the Washington Nationals.
A rookie thanks Clemente for saving father's life (AP)
2 Sep 2010 at 3:34pm
When Pirates second baseman Neil Walker takes the field at PNC Park, he needs only to glance over his shoulder at the 21-foot Roberto Clemente Wall in right field for inspiration. Walker, one of the majors' top rookies, grew up in Pittsburgh hearing countless stories about one of baseball's greatest outfielders and a man whose influence in his native Puerto Rico extends far beyond the...
Fukudome, Marmol lead Cubs past Pirates 5-3 (AP)
1 Sep 2010 at 6:46pm
Thomas Diamond received a game ball and a beer shower after his first major league win. Diamond relieved injured starter Tom Gorzelanny and was part of a strong effort by the Chicago Cubs' bullpen Wednesday in a 5-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates. "It's always nice to get the first. I wish it would have happened a little sooner," Diamond said.
Walker, Jones lead Pirates past Cubs 14-7 (AP)
31 Aug 2010 at 11:12pm
The Pittsburgh Pirates have struggled almost everywhere this season -- except Wrigley Field. Neil Walker and Garrett Jones each hit a long two-run homer, and Pittsburgh beat the Chicago Cubs 14-7 on Tuesday night for a rare road victory. Walker went 4 for 5 with four RBIs and three runs scored for the Pirates, who won for only the fifth time in 43 road games and ended a 14-game losing streak away...
Pirates' Morton on pace for historically bad ERA (AP)
31 Aug 2010 at 4:48pm
With slightly more than a month of the season remaining, Pirates right-hander Charlie Morton is threatening to have one of the worst years by any starting pitcher in major league history. Despite spending nearly three months in Triple-A, Morton is 1-10 with a 10.03 ERA in 11 starts for the last-place Pirates.
Zambrano goes 5-plus, homers as Cubs rout Pirates (AP)
30 Aug 2010 at 11:30pm
Carlos Zambrano and the of the Cubs' offense made Mike Quade's managerial debut at Wrigley Field relatively easy. Carlos Zambrano allowed one unearned run in 5 1-3 innings and hit a two-run homer to lead the Chicago Cubs to a 14-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night. Aramis Ramirez was 2 for 3 with four RBIs to help Quade win his first game at Wrigley Field as manager.
