The Blue Jays knew when they shut down Brandon Morrow after his 26th start to keep his innings under control that they would need someone to make a spot start this week against the Texas Rangers.
And for that purpose, they have called up a former major-leaguer and a local guy as well, right-hander Shawn Hill, who was a Montreal Expo when he picked up his first major league win against the Blue Jays. That was July 4, 2004, when the teams played a series in Puerto Rico.
Hill, who is from Mississauga, Ontario, has also pitched for the Washington Nationals and the San Diego Padres. He has twice had Tommy John surgery.
The sixth-round draft pick by the Expos in 2000, Hill signed on Jan.

Sign of the times: Jays fan hit by falling letter (AP)
16 hours ago Baseball fans have long been warned to look out for foul balls and flying bats. Now add falling letters to the list. Jays win 7-3 to snap Yankees' 8-game win streak (AP)

The Yankees had been riding a season-high eight-game winning streak while their star third baseman was on the disabled list with a nagging calf injury. They'd won 11 of their last 14 and pulled ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays by 2 1/2 games in the brutal AL East.
